Week 2 Group 3c Meeting
Our weekly group discussion based upon based upon questions set on mcopenmedia began by discussing which articles we had all picked from our previouse weeks assignments (media diaries)that we were asked to further research into:
- Internet based site youtube:lee evans show
- Television:seinfeld
- Television :Hollyoaks
- Television :smallville
- Television :friends
- Home entertainment computer console xbow 360:halo 3
- Portabel computer console ps3:pro Evo
We found that we all listed and chose forms of media that are named Hot media this is forms of media that we have no part in making and no representation ,forms of entertainment that we obsorb and do not question. We disscussed other forms of media in which we use and found that we usually use more than one at a time eg;music, the internet ,hand held consoles whilst using other forms. We found that in our group we do not distinguish music as time to listen to music isnt allocated it is used for background.
Who makes the Media
We decided upon the fact that there isnt a correct answer for this as it can be said that it is made by anyone so we decided upon a split of mainstream media such as producers ,production companys etc and non which revolves around us as the everyday individual. The media industry revolves around money but non mainstream usually doesnt, the audience was the key area in which we rested the brunt of this open ended question, producers of media go on public demand forms will change to popularity even down to the growing desensitisation that is ever expanding. Also where old forms of media become obselite others come to take over such as gameing consoles and television on demand etc so media has to change and evolve.
For what purpose
Money, power social and political influence( Propaganda),audiences, for ones self the list is ongoing and endless in all honesty. The main reason for which people make the media is for he audience in my opinion aswell as profit for the Media tycoons in which run the industry.Such a person as Rupert Merdoc who own a large portion of the overall mainsteam media industry from newspapers to television, movies ,book writers etc ,he does it for profit but also for influence it can be seen spread across his organisations that what ever political party he is following usually gets the most coverage over his wide range of media distribution companys.this shows that the media can be used in force across media for a number of purposes.
How
By becoming larger than everyone else,we decided that because mainly media is ran by a conclave of media tycoons they decide upon what is done within the media by using there power and wealth to push there forms of media and there beleifs to the forfront.
How and why is it changing
The publics demand and appetite for media is ever growing and expanding, what we have is good and has become superior in so many ways even in the last ten years the advancements that has been done in media are fantastic and todays societys have been apart of this ever chancing technological advancement so what we know is that the technology that we have is good but will soon be obselite and in comparison worlds apart and like small children were all waaiting for the next toy to play with.everything is becoming better so we like the choice and we like to go that one step further.we also decided that the media is evolving so quickly but because it is ,originality is not evolving people are running out of fresh ideas or ideas are to similar or not backed so they are not produced.this is why there are now more remakes and adoptations of books, comic, and especially film because they take pieces of media that is already succesfull but ad a new age twist but because it was succesfull before they no they have more of a chance of profit on this. Our group ended the session looking at The Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in Birmingham.
The Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies was a research centre at the university of Birmingham in England. It was founded by Richard Hoggart in 1964 and it’s main focus of study was Cultural Studies. However they also examined Marxism, post-structuralism, feminism and critical race theory. The centre looked at mass media and evaluated the effects and the interpretations of these representations on their audience. They identified that society was changing and therefore it was harder for producers to suit the needs of all the audience of the masses.
The centre’s ideas were important because it provided us with the history to go back and see how media has changed and developed into what it is today. It has also given us an idea how society has changed over the years. As we discussed in the session questions, media and the audience work together and this is one idea the centre noticed. We think the centre’s ideas may have helped bring choice to the modern audience in the form of hundreds of thousands of unique and specialist channels on TV, radio and the Internet.
The introduction of undergraduate teaching in th 1980’s affected the centre’s research output and ultimately it’s influence on the field, which eventually led to it’s controversial closing.
